Biography

Hi. I'm Ian-Paul Atkins, and I set up Red Blue Green Productions to indulge my love of visual storytelling. For years I'd been making videos in my head, while pursuing careers of (variously) computing, mature English Literature student, reviews journalist and writer. Finally I ended up working for Contender Entertainment as the content producer for their DVDs (including the not-bought-by-enough Invisible Man sets, the "I feel dirty having anything to do with this" Yu-Gi-Oh releases, and the first three years of UK TV series Spooks’ DVD releases). It was in interviewing all the people connected to Spooks that I began to realise that directing isn't something you only get to do if you're singled out by some sort of elite organisation at birth, and that - gasp - perhaps I could be allowed to do it too. I left Contender and started gaining practical experience in filming by working on video content for a number of websites. These included Lethal Lipstick, where I could indulge my love of the femme fatale character, Bond girls and those cheesy B movies that now keep Steven Seagal and Jean-Claude Van Damme in crisps. Then in 2006 I finally bought myself a camera and started doing my own work: the fruits of which you can see here at Red Blue Green Productions. Together with some old friends and colleagues we've worked hard to make the most of limited resources, with the priority given to interesting visuals with a few surprises and shocks. 2007 wasn't the most productive of years, but did include the first outside commission (She Opens Roses), the first standalone "short" (Firework Songs) and even a shoot which not only took place entirely outside of London but seamlessly combined multiple locations, while making a point about the battle of the sexes (Happy Place). 2008 has – after a slow start – seen a number of productions, including three filmed concurrently in August. The year saw the debut of the Red Blue Green News comedies, of which there are now three normal episodes and a James Bond Special. A couple of virals have gone onto You Tube, and RBG entered the Marillion video competition for their "Whatever Is Wrong With You" single with a production that the band have highlighted as one of their favourites. In March, RBG also filmed on behalf of Becky Speed's website on a guns-and-girls piece called The Infiltrator, a video which will debut on Becky’s site when it is launched later this year. Future projects at present are focused on two short film scripts. One is an femme fatale actioner entitled The Ocean's Daughter, and the other is a look at the life of 1960s TV comedians called Images in 625. Keep watching this space for further news as and when.
